Day 1 – Speaker Event
On Friday, May 1st, Dan Mall, Founder and CEO of SuperFriendly, set the virtual portfolio review weekend into motion as the guest speaker. Dan’s presentation drew in a crowd of about 30 virtual attendees. During his presentation “Cheat Codes for Job Seekers,” Dan spoke on several topics such as how to steal and create original content through imitation, remixing, and invention. Along with his point on how to steal, he also discussed techniques for becoming an expert at design, and how to make your portfolio websites a love letter. The discussion was informative and a wealth of creative knowledge for professionals and students alike.

Day 2 – Portfolio Review
AIGA Jacksonville’s 31st annual Portfolio Review brought together emerging student designers and seasoned industry professionals for a day of one-on-one reviews— ONLINE for the first time! Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the annual event had to pivot to the virtual world.
The review took place on Saturday, May 2nd via Zoom video conferencing. This revamped event brought together more than 40+ students and 40+ reviewers from several locations such as Australia, Pennsylvania, California, and Tennessee— as well as our local schools Jacksonville University, University of North Florida, Flagler, and SCAD.
Here are a few takeaways from some of the folks in attendance:
“Great experience and suggestions with how to tweak projects.” – Hali
“Thank you for your time and putting it on. So happy I did this.” – Andrea
“So awesome to talk to everyone. I’m excited to change it [my portfolio] up.” – Preston, sophomore
“This is a very important event.” – David Porter
There’s No Review Without You
Even though the 31st review had to be modified and performed virtually, the Portfolio Review Weekend continued the tradition of bringing together students, designers, and professionals for a weekend of creative energy and community amongst designers and artists.
Thank you to all who were in attendance and who supported because YOU made this virtual event one to remember for the students as well as AIGA Jax! We couldn’t have pulled this event off without you, and we hope to see you next year for the 32nd review.
